Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid, it is...

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires ranking of the world's 100 wealthiest individuals, the richest people on the planet got even richer in 2012, adding $241 billion to their collective net worth: http://goo.gl/oKAJ5

Incomes of bottom 90% grew $59 in 40 years. World Bank study shows that the richest 300 people in Europe and North America have the same income as 4.7 billion poor people: http://goo.gl/6hLE4

“Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid, it is man-made and can be removed by the actions of human beings.” -Nelson Mandela

I'd take the iPhone back to the store where I bought it and bring that girl some cleaning supplies an tell her to get to work! Then i would hang pictures of children who have nothing on her bedroom walls and ground her to her room for 2 weeks. Then I would serve her the same meal, three meals a day for a week. Then I would make her sponsor a child with 70% of her allowance. Maybe after reading some of the letters from her child she has sponsored, she will learn how lucky some children are over others who are less fortunate!
These are all the ways of the old world in going about raising children. However, you could also patiently and lovingly seat down with her and show her photos of these less fortunate children and help her realize the truths enveloping the different situations in this world. To do it lovingly will shorten the period of learning time more effectively. How do I know that? My grandchildren came to my life to teach me exactly that.
Just remember, it's not the American kid's fault that she's so out of touch and selfish -- her parents created this situation. I think the PARENTS need a lesson or two!
